Every medicine pack contains one document that most of us push aside or throw away without reading: the package leaflet. That's a mistake that can have serious consequences. When to stop taking the medicine immediately and seek help
The leaflet clearly identifies symptoms that require you to stop using the medicine at once and contact a doctor or go to an emergency department. Memorise these warning signs — they affect only a fraction of users but are not hypothetical.
The Black Triangle — Enhanced Monitoring Symbol
If you see a black inverted triangle (▼) on the packaging or in the leaflet, accompanied by the note "This medicine is subject to additional monitoring", it means the product is relatively new to the market and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) is collecting additional safety data about it.
The black triangle does not mean the medicine is dangerous — all standard regulatory requirements have been met. It simply means that reports of any side effects by patients are especially important and valuable. Storage and Expiry Date

- "Store below 25°C" — standard room temperature, but on a hot day inside a parked car temperatures can reach 60–80°C. Never leave medicines in a vehicle.
- "Store in a refrigerator (2–8°C)" — applies to some eye drops, insulin and many probiotics. Leaving a refrigerated medicine at room temperature longer than permitted shortens its shelf life.
- "Do not freeze" — freezing can irreversibly destroy the structure of an emulsion or suspension.
Additional conditions
- Keep away from light — many active substances break down under UV radiation (which is why many vials are amber-coloured or wrapped in foil).
- Keep away from moisture — hygroscopic tablets absorb water from the air and may stick together or degrade.
- Keep in the original package — the blister foil protects the tablet from moisture and light; loose tablets in a jar lose their properties faster.
Expiry date
The "EXP" or "Expiry date" printed on the pack is the last date up to which the manufacturer guarantees the medicine's effectiveness and safety. After this date, the correct concentration of the active ingredient and the absence of toxic breakdown products can no longer be guaranteed. Expired medicines must be taken to a pharmacy for disposal — never put them in household waste or flush them down the toilet (they contaminate the environment). Pharmacies are obliged to accept expired medicines from patients free of charge.
Note: once opened (for example syrups, drops and ointments), a shorter "in-use shelf life after first opening" applies — typically 28 or 30 days, regardless of the date on the packaging.
Reporting Side Effects
Every leaflet includes a paragraph in section 4 encouraging patients to report side effects. In most EU countries this is done through a national medicines authority, a dedicated online portal, or directly via your doctor or pharmacist. Can I use a medicine after its expiry date if it "looks normal"?
There is no reliable way to assess a medicine's potency by looking or smelling it. A tablet that appears and smells perfectly normal may contain 30–50% less active ingredient than stated. For life-saving medicines (adrenaline, nitroglycerin) the consequences of using an expired product can be catastrophic. Do not take the risk — return expired medicines to a pharmacy and buy fresh stock.
The leaflet uses Latin names — how do I understand the active ingredient?
INN names (International Nonproprietary Names) are Latin or Latinised names for active ingredients. Their endings often indicate the pharmacological group: -olol (beta-blockers), -pril (ACE inhibitors), -statin (cholesterol-lowering drugs). For over-the-counter medicines and supplements, simply search for the active-ingredient name online — you will find reliable information from national medicines agencies or trusted health databases.
What if the leaflet print is too small to read?
You have the right to request a more accessible version. EU regulations require manufacturers to provide the leaflet in a format suitable for visually impaired patients on request. Does a dietary supplement leaflet follow the same format as a medicine leaflet?
No — and that is an important difference. A dietary supplement is a food product, not a medicinal product, so the standardised pharmaceutical leaflet format does not apply to it. Supplement manufacturers are not required to conduct clinical trials before placing a product on the market. In practice this means that label information for supplements may be less precise, and sections on "side effects" and "interactions" are often absent or dealt with only briefly. My doctor prescribed two tablets but the leaflet says one. Which should I follow?
Follow your doctor — provided they were aware of your weight, health status and other medicines. The leaflet states dosage for a "typical adult", whereas a doctor sets the dose individually.
